Chantal Kreviazuk: Christmas Is A Way Of Life, My Dear
Chantal Kreviazuk – one of Canada’s most accomplished songwriters and recognizable voices –released her eighth studio album, “Get to You,” this summer. Heralded by the title track and first single, the album features 11 songs, all written and produced by Chantal with Dylan Wiggins. “This album means so much to me because it has a positive message throughout about self-love, acceptance and perseverance,” says Chantal. “It’s also the album I created the most independently without outside influence. It’s my essence of recording at the moment and for that I am so proud and happy.” The choice to proceed with the release of an album during a global pandemic was an easy one for Chantal. “The wonderful thing about music is that it is always welcomed and needed,” she says. “In times of crisis, it offers solace and comfort. Without question, now is the time to release music.” Chantal Kreviazuk is a platinum-selling, three-time Juno Award-winning artist from Winnipeg. In 2016, she returned with her sixth album "Hard Sail" after a nearly seven-year break from recorded music. During that time, she was focused on raising her three sons with husband Raine Maida, as well as her other musical passion, crafting songs. Chantal has written for Drake, Pitbull, Kendrick Lamar, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Josh Groban and countless others. A holiday album - “Christmas Is A Way Of Life, My Dear” – followed in 2019, and a brand new album “Get To You” was released this summer. In 2014, Chantal and Raine became members of the Order of Canada, recognizing their efforts to raise awareness and support for numerous causes including human and animal rights, mental health, education and the environment. Chantal has been an ambassador to War Child for nearly two decades and one of the organization’s founding artists. Raine and Chantal released their first collaborative album together as MOON VS SUN, "I’m Going to Break Your Heart," as well as an accompanying documentary, earlier this year.

Martha Wainwright
Martha Wainwright is beginning again. The beguiling performer and songwriter returns with Love Will Be Reborn, out in August. Not since 2012’s Come Home to Mama has a Martha Wainwright record been so full of original written material. Wainwright’s fifth studio album follows recent years of loneliness and clarity in search of optimism and joy. Wainwright wrote the first song—and what would become the title track— of the record a few years ago. It was a very dark time, she says, but the positivity and luminosity of “Love Will Be Reborn” signalled what was to come. Wainwright was at a friend’s home in London to collaborate on something else entirely when she was struck by the need to write the song. Wainwright demures when songwriting—her process is undisciplined and she prefers to be alone. That day, soon left to that solitude, “Love Will Be Reborn” poured out of her. “I wrote the song in its entirety within ten or fifteen minutes. I was bawling.” The track feels very English to Wainwright with a soft melody and thrumming guitar, evoking pastoral scenes. Wainwright croons, “There is love in every part of me, I know/ But the key has fallen deep into the snow / When the spring comes I will find it, and unlock my heart to rewind it.” It’s poetic and mysterious, yet still there is a yearning for joy and renewal. Wainwright sang the as-yet recorded “Love Will Be Reborn” on tour, serving as an anthem, giving her hope in a time when it was hard to have some. Much of Wainwright’s songwriting since 2016’s Goodnight City felt too raw. “There were several years where I picked up the guitar, and I was so, so sad and depressed. I would just put it down because It was terrible.” Before writing it out, or writing through it for catharsis, Wainwright had to live it. Album opener “Middle of the Lake” reinforces Wainwright’s path forward as she sings over voltaic chords and percussion, “I sing my songs of love and pain / Winds of change or simply singing, I'm singing in the rain.” Her work never shies away from an existential throbbing wound. “There are a couple major subjects on the record. From what I can tell, there's really dark and then light,” she says,” It really is reflective of a very difficult period of divorce. Then, after that, it’s meeting somebody new and amazing. And so you hear certain songs about this new love.” Love Will Be Reborn does have its playful and sensual side running parallel to some grim honesty. “Hole In My Heart” is an upbeat song, with Wainwright singing, “I got naked right away when I saw you / My love was like the rain when I saw you,” as is the track, “Getting Older,” which is about aging. And this new love. Other songs, she says, “represent me trying to shake away the past a little bit, the ball and chain of that anger, trying  to escape from it.” There is no song more gripping than “Report Card.” The song is stripped to essential instrumentals punctuating her anguish. Wainwright expresses on the sombre track a feeling of deep loneliness, evoking emotional nuances particular to parents and individuals separated from their children because of custody arrangements. “I was able to crystallize that sadness by portraying this woman alone in her house.” Wainwright sorrowfully sings, “My heart is always broken and I don’t want you to feel the way i do and “If I seem sad it’s because I am.” Singing about her children and family is also familiar to Wainwright, a child from such a prestigious musical family. Wainwright has long carried this narrative featuring her famous father, Loudon, her mother, Kate McGarrigle, and her brother, Rufus. Wainwright’s writing has, of course, evolved as she has grown older and become a mother. She has changed simply by living. While she was, as she says, extremely autobiographical before, her writing has altered to protect her children in some ways. But, and more important, she says, “I can't deny myself the need to express myself. As a songwriter, I have to be able to express myself, and it would be crazy to me to not have songs that are about these two people who I care the most about in the world. Back in Montreal, in the basement of her brand new cafe, Ursa, serving as a studio, Wainwright got to work. She enlisted the help of Toronto musicians Thom Gill, Phil Melanson and Josh Cole to perform in her band, and producer Pierre Marchand. His best known collaboration is with Sarah McLaughlin, producing some of her iconic 90s songs. Marchand also has a familial connection to Wainwright. Marchand produced her brother Rufus’s second album poses as well as Wainwright’s mother and aunt’s record, Heartbeats Accelerating. It was a record made after sometime, much like Wainwright’s gap since Goodnight City, and McGarrigle was the same age that Wainwright is now. It seems like a musical synergy only the late McGarrigle and Wainwright could have. Like many records, Love Will Be Reborn was made during a global pandemic. But the process, both freeing and infuriating, offered Wainwright a new way of creating. She let go a little more, giving way for Marchand to play around with vocals, emphasizing the beauty in its inherent scratchiness and edge. This record, Wainwright jokes, is her Canadian record, as she’s back in Montreal, working with musicians from Toronto, and Marchand as producer. Martha Wainwright's role as an artist has always been to embrace her wildness and sketch out her raw depth. This edge is what makes Wainwright uncompromisingly herself, and continues to draw in an audience two decades on. To begin again does not mean starting over. This process of rebirth honours the past to move forward. Love Will Be Reborn captures Wainwright’s heart in transition. In an effort to rise out of some painful depths, as she says much like a phoenix from the ashes of an existential twilight, Wainwright bore witness to what her heart endured to find a new joy once more.

Matt Holubowski

Matt Holubowski’s career has really taken off since the 2014 release of Old Man, a collection of folk songs inspired by his many trips and experiences around the world. The watershed moment would be the release of Solitudes, two years later, on the Audiogram label. Produced by Connor Seidel, just as the previous and upcoming ones, the album introduced him to a wide audience who discovered his mercurial voice and captivating songs. Matt earned a Gold record for Solitudes as well as two nominations at the 39th ADISQ Gala, for Album of the Year and Concert of the Year–Anglophone categories. The Solitudes tour that followed the album’s release had him criss-crossing Canada, the United States and Europe, to perform nearly 200 concerts.

In the Spring of 2018, he signed with the German label Motor Musik and the French label Yokanta, distributing Solitudes in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France and Belgium. Soon after, he participated in the Printemps de Bourges, toured as the support act for American artist Ben Folds in more than a dozen cities across Europe, and performed in London’s Meltdown Festival at the invitation of Robert Smith, singer of The Cure.

After returning to North America, Matt appears at Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, at the Festival d’été de Québec (where he earned its prix Espoir), at the Regina, Ottawa and Winnipeg folk festivals, and at Osheaga Festival in Montreal. Following a series of East Coast US concerts in 2018, Matt crossed the Atlantic once more as the opening act for Swiss artist Sophie Hunger on a number of European cities, before returning to close the Solitudes tour in Montreal at the Corona Theater.

Early in 2019, Matt opened for singer-songwriter Dan Magnan in eastern Canada, a last waltz before retreating to the woods for two months in Banff, Alberta, to devote himself to writing the songs for his next album, which is set to be released in 2020. Slowly moving away from folk, he explores new sounds and fleshes out his songs’ arrangements in collaboration with his musicians, guitarist Simon Angell, bassist Marc-André Landry, drummer Stéphane Bergeron and cellist and keyboardist Marianne Houle.

In July, Matt momentarily paused his retreat to present the closing event of the Montreal International Jazz Festival, a memorable evening for both the artist and his audience. The following day, La Presse writes: “Holubowski touched us with grace, sincerity and sensitivity. He also has a charisma which cannot be glossed over, it was so captivating”.

Songs of Remembrance: Music of the 1960s Folk Revival

The river is deep and the river is wide, hallelujah
Green pastures on the other side, hallelujah

Join the Aeolian as we celebrate remembrance with the Phoenix Sessions in a special Thursday night premier of “Songs of Remembrance: Music of the 1960s Folk Revival."

This powerful journey through music of the folk revival and beyond will remind us of love and lives, lost. With very special guests, Paul Mills, Joanne Does, Douglas Long and Dan Rutledge, this performance will balance evocative memories of a different time and the extraordinary events of the past two years. From Pete Seeger to Joni Mitchell to Ian & Sylvia Tyson, this production will take us back to turbulent time  history. The Civil Rights Movement, which had been stewing for some time, came to a head. The Cold War was at its height. The United States was going from a turbulent war in Korea to another in Vietnam. And, with the baby boom generation coming of age, there was a lot of change in the air.

And the band played Waltzing Matilda
As the ship pulled away from the quay
And amidst all the cheers, the flag-waving and tears
We sailed off for Gallipoli.

Paul Mills

Paul began his performing career almost sixty years ago inspired by the music of the 1960s Folk Music Revival. He went on to become an award-winning producer of folk music records (over 200) with artists such as Stan Rogers, Ron Hynes and children’s performers Sharon Lois & Bram.  He is now retired from that profession but continues to perform folk music and is delighted to a part of this show for the Aeolian Phoenix series.

Joanne Does

Joanne Does loves nothing better than connecting with others through music.    Coming from a musical family she grew up listening to Simon & Garfunkel and Peter, Paul & Mary.   By day she works in long term care making music with residents; on her time off you might catch her at a local song circle.

Dan Rutledge

Dan enjoys guitar, mandolin, banjo, and upright bass and loves most styles of music. His CDs are singer-songwriter oriented, and with thanks to Internet sales, one of them is growing roots in over 20 countries. Dan currently does solo and duo work, has a chair in a local jazz trio, a folk quartette and a singer songwriter group.  An American friend easily explains this lifestyle: ‘Without music, life would Bb’.

Doug Long

It was at the Riverboat Folk Club in Toronto in the 60s that a precocious intellectual kid bound for an academic career saw Joni Mitchell, Tom Rush, Murray McLachlan, Phil Ochs, Tim Hardin, Gordon Lightfoot and many others. That was when Doug Long learned how to feel, and how to express feelings in music. When he sings and plays now - guitar, violin, viola - the years melt away and Doug is once again, as Dylan said, “young” and “unlearned” and full of a passion for life and for music.

Paul Langille & Paul Sims

"Langille’s songs are too good to ignore. And he plays guitar with a ferocity seldom seen these days." - Graham Rockingham, Music Editor, Hamilton Spectator

Paul Langille took to the stage at a very young age, singing and playing guitar in dance halls, service clubs, and numerous other venues in and around his hometown of Hamilton, Ontario. He moved to London, ON in the early '70s where he was a regular fixture at the old Smales Pace Coffee House on Clarence Street.

These days a musician and artist must utilize all the voices available to him. Paul has many voices, all emanating from the heart and soul. Here are some of Paul’s strongest assets – An emotionally charged voice – A proven history as a guitar-smith with powerful and experienced song writing skills – A man with an honest passion for his music.

Marc Jordan

NOTE TO TICKET PURCHASERS: CLICK HERE FOR CURRENT AEOLIAN COVID POLICY BEFORE PURCHASING TICKETS

Marc was born in Brooklyn, NY, son of singer Charles Jordan, and grew up in Toronto, Canada. Jordan’s music career really took off in 1978 when he was signed to Warner Music in Los Angeles and began writing songs for and with the likes of Diana Ross, Chicago, Kansas, Manhattan Transfer, Kenny Loggins, Bette Midler, Natalie Cole, Olivia Newton John, Joe Cocker, Bonnie Raitt, Josh Groban, Cher and Rod Stewart, including the world wide #1 hit “Rhythm of My Heart.” Jordan has won numerous ASCAP, JUNO, SOCAN and Smooth Jazz awards over the years.

His songs have been on 35 million CDs and he has recorded 16 albums of his own material. In his forty plus year career he has been a hit solo artist (‘Marina Del Rey’, ‘Survival’), a sought-after songwriter, and in the last decade, he took up a paintbrush and became an amazing visual artist.

With his most recent album release of Both Sides in April 2019, Jordan finally explored his love of the great American songbook by recording some of his favorite hits from the mid 20th century. Carefully crafted and recorded with the Prague Symphony, Jordan put his own modern spin on classics like “The Nearness of You” and “What Are You Doing For the Rest of Your Life”, along with Joni Mitchel's “Both Sides Now” and Lou Reid’s masterpiece “Walk on the Wild Side”. Regarding the album, Jeff Moses of WJMX Smooth Jazz Boston Global Radio praised, “Smooth vocals above perfect covers. Wow! This is a world-class masterpiece album.”

Currently, Marc Jordan and his wife Amy Sky are spending more time writing and recording in Nashville, TN and plan to release a new album in 2020. Trends come and go, but for an artist of Marc’s breadth, marrying his talent with inspiration has never been an issue. There’s always been a project in the headlights for Jordan, ”My passion for music and for songwriting is deeper and more profound now than ever before in my life. And so, I go to my studio, put my headphones on every day, seven days a week, and I write.”

Phoenix Sessions - July

In a darkened bedroom, lit only by the amber glow from an old floor model radio, two young brothers aged 6 and 12 lay in their beds, listening to the country music broadcasts from the Grand Ol’ Opry, and practiced their harmonies. Two years later, the youngest one was playing the definitive 8-year-old’s version of “Desolation Row” on his ukulele. He soon abandoned that instrument to teach himself the flute, violin and guitar.

Within ten years, and barely out of high school, Garnet Rogers was on the road as a full-time working musician with his older brother Stan. Together they formed what has come to be accepted as one of the most influential acts in North American folk music.

Since then, Garnet Rogers has established himself as ‘One of the major talents of our time”. Hailed by the Boston Globe as a “charismatic performer and singer”, Garnet is a man with a powerful physical presence – close to six and a half feet tall – with a voice to match. With his “smooth, dark baritone” (Washington Post) his incredible range, and thoughtful, dramatic phrasing, Garnet is widely considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the finest singers anywhere. His music, like the man himself, is literate, passionate, highly sensitive, and deeply purposeful. Cinematic in detail, his songs “give expression to the unspoken vocabulary of the heart” (Kitchener Waterloo Record). An optimist at heart, Garnet sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small victories of the everyday. As memorable as his songs, his over-the-top humour and lightning-quick wit moves his audience from tears to laughter and back again.

“Garnet Rogers is capable of awe-inspiring and unpredictable stuff – and that includes more than just music”

Resolutely independent, Garnet Rogers has turned down offers from major labels to do his music his own way.

From classical to jazz, rock to country, and bluegrass to folk, the Sessions aim to bring music back into your home and heart. Interested in one show only? Trust us: you'll like what you see. Try the Phoenix Sessions all month and experience a few productions that you might never have seen in person. Our goal was to reignite live music and get artists on stage, technicians behind the soundboard and our patrons on their feet listening to extraordinary talent in extraordinary times.

Aaron Allen

Tattoo artist and country singer-songwriter Aaron Allen is back with another emotionally-charged EP; Highway Mile is available everywhere today. Remaining true to his signature sound that fans have come to love, Allen brings his raw and honest songwriting to today’s debut. While the release marks Allen’s 10th studio release, Highway Mile was produced by  2018, 2019 CCMA and CMAO Producer of the Year Jeff Dalziel.

“I wanted to make something that stood up over time,” said Allen on the new EP. “Highway Mile is really about the stories from my real-life experiences —  I just tried to be transparent with the hope that maybe my story would connect with others. I hope we’ve done that with this new record.”

Quickly becoming Allen’s fastest-growing single, the new releases’ title track — “Highway Mile” — was added to 7 playlists on Apple Music out of the gate, gaining almost 200,000 streams in its first month.  Set to surpass the previously released “Where Music Comes From,” “Highway Mile” demonstrates Allen’s dedication to creating deeply personal stories through music.

“I didn’t really intend for this song to be recorded but when Dalziel heard it he said we had to,” said Allen when speaking of “Highway Mile.” “The song is meant as a reminder to slow down — to take time for my wife and myself. Life can be so darn busy, especially in this industry, so I need that reminder every day. “

In addition to its title track, the new EP will include three previously released singles and a handful of new tracks including “Can We Go Back,” “Superman” and “Mine All Mine.” Featuring many of the same players throughout, the record has a unique, cohesive feel that the listener can identify with from the first song to last.  The songs are mature, honest and relatable.  It’s easy to see that Allen is carving out his own path in the industry and taking the road less traveled with this new release.

Since his first release to radio in 2019 Allen has quickly become one of Canada’s most promising rising stars. With more than a million streams to his name, Allen’s style remains as true-to-life as ever but after years of forging a devoted fan base as an independent artist, the time has finally come to take the next step. Pushed by the support of Dalziel (Dan Davidson, The Washboard Union, Andrew Hyatt), Allen has created music that will definitely have the industry listening.

Tony Dekker

2018 marked the 15th anniversary of Great Lake Swimmers. Over seven albums, multiple EPs, live broadcasts and reissues, the Toronto-based project led by singer-songwriter Tony Dekker has established itself as a beloved indie folk act in Canada and beyond. The CBC has called them “a national treasure” with a sound that is at once familiar and distinct, using the tools of folk music as the starting point to delve deeper.

The latest release, “The Waves, The Wake” branches out to include new sounds such as harp, lute, pipe organ, woodwinds, congas and marimbas, alongside the more familiar flecks and chimes of the banjo, piano, and 12-string electric guitar. A scaled back, solo acoustic version was also released in 2019.

Great Lake Swimmers have been nominated twice for Juno Awards, have been shortlisted for the prestigious Polaris Prize, and won a Canadian Indie Award for Favourite Folk/Roots Artist/Group. They have shared the stage as support for such

musical luminaries as Robert Plant, Feist, Daniel Lanois, and Calexico, and have appeared as headliners at many of Canada’s major folk music festivals.

“A minimalist, atmospheric compendium of songs with a sonic environment the listener can easily get lost in.”

– The Vue

“Dekker has done a masterful job of finding that balance on The Waves, the Wake, which has enough connections to the past to satisfy long-time fans of Great Lake Swimmers even while the singer looks to the future and moves forward as an artist.”

– The Georgia Straight

“A cherished blend of folk and orchestral indie pop.”

Marty Kolls
Singer-songwriter Marty Kolls brings the energy of her east coast upbringing, classical music training, and life-long experience on the stage to every one of her performances. She mesmerizes her audience with her voice, melody and presence, with songs that speak of living life from the heart. “Marty Kolls is a revelation,” says the London Free Press’ Arts Editor, James Reaney. Marty released her first full length album entitled ‘This Life’ in 2014 to a standing room only audience at one of Canada’s top rated and intimate music venues, Aeolian Hall. This performance was an experience for all who attended and awaited for the arrival of this much anticipated album including her friend and producer Simon Larochette of Sugar Shack Studios. The album sums up much of Marty‘s experience as an artist and lover of life, not without it’s disappointments and battles. The title track ‘This Life’, inspired by a Richard Linklater film ‘Waking Life’ urges us to live in the present before there is ‘nothing left to give’.  Like warning bells going off in your head, the bombast of the horns and punch of the drums reiterate the same message. An artist who writes from experience Marty takes her audience to the many places she’s lived such as her beloved New Brunswick with it’s winding roads and formative memories.  She also speaks of her times living and working for years in Asia as a musician and teacher where her appreciation for privileged life was awakened. Upon her return to Canada in 2006 Marty was thrown into the mix of musical talent in Toronto Ontario. Finding her way through the modern era of online overnight sensations, she nestled into the musical venues of the west end like the Cameron House and the Dakota Tavern carrying on the traditions of her live music upbringing. There she stumbled upon producer Jesse Capon and together they produced a two song CD through the FACTOR Music Demo Grant, now offering Marty something to share with the industry. It wasn’t long before her stories would take a new turn upon discovering she was pregnant with her daughter, and shortly after made the move with her husband to his home town of London Ontario where they now live. Continuing to make music in a number of bands, including well known cover-grass band Kevin’s Bacon Train, Marty has found a home and community of strong musicians and friends. Now sharing the stage with acts like Sarah Harmer, Dan Mangan and Whitehorse, she continues to love and take pleasure in the good fortune that is ‘This Life’.
